Sharna Nicholson & John DiCerbo “Growing Memories”

Two student volunteers from the Cornell Master Gardener program are integrating their skills and project with our residents. They met with our residents on February 7th to include them in the project!

Scientists have confirmed that your sense of smell is closely linked to triggering emotions and memories, probably more so than any of our other senses. The scent of a spice or herb in bloom can conjure up recollections of a childhood picnic, for example.

Read a Recipe for Literacy (RRL) Returns to San Simeon

On February 13th, the kids with Read a Recipe for Literacy (RRL) came back to San Simeon to read and share more stories with our residents. It was another wonderful day with the children and our residents truly enjoyed their stories. Some of the shyer children really came out of their shell and all of them were very well behaved. We are all starting to form friendships as the children sought out the residents they visited on the last gathering in April of last year.

Supporting Women’s Heart Health

On Friday, February 1st, staff and residents alike showed their support for women’s heart health by wearing red here at San Simeon. National Wear Red Day occures on the first Friday of every February to help promote The Heart Truth, a campaign meant to raise awareness of the risk of heart disease in women. The campaign is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute,part of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Sharna Nicholson & the Mary Kay “Adopt a Grandparent” Program

The following is from Sharna Berzin Nicholson, a Mary Kay Cosmetics independent beauty consultant who sponsors and organizes the Adopt a Grandparent Program at San Simeon by the Sound.

Ten years ago, I had a near fatal accident, but I was blessed and healed. I like to believe that it was a turning point in my life, realizing that we never have control, just choices! My choice was to find a way to give back to others by sharing my time, energy and friendship at a local nursing home in upstate NY. I learned of a Mary Kay company program called “Adopt a Grandparent” and was excited to find a way to give back during the holidays to those that might not otherwise receive a visitor or gift from a friend or family member.

Santa Makes the Rounds at San Simeon

Look Who We Found!

Santa and his elf gave out gifts to each resident here at San Simeon by the Sound on Christmas Day! Some also received from the Hanukkah helper. But one thing is for sure – there were plenty of smiles and good cheer for everyone.

Donkeys Come Back to Visit

East End Ass Whisperers (EEAWs) Return to San Simeon

On May 17th, during National Nursing Home Week, the East End Ass Whisperers came back to San Simeon. Our friends Harry & Cathy Springer and Bernadette & Emily Deerkoski come year after year to bring smiles to our residents! Together five donkeys visit and entertain us. Diesel, the most active, makes sure he says hello to everyone. Lil E. Putian, Pop E, Hope, and C. More (Ass) like to travel around the patio in pairs as they find comfort in each other. It is such a wonderful afternoon to be with our friends. They are such a joy.
