At San Simeon by the Sound one of our many areas of specialization is the care of patients living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) here at our East End facility.
MS is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system through the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms may be as mild as numbness in the limbs, or as severe as paralysis or blindness.
Our team at San Simeon addresses resident’s psychosocial issues, spiritual needs, and promotes self-independence and dignity with the goal of improving and maintaining function. This patient-centered holistic approach promotes health, wellness and overall conditioning to reduce fatigue and achieve optimal function.
As MS patients are not your typical nursing home resident, San Simeon’s expertly trained staff knows they require a unique approach. MS patients tend to be younger, are more mentally alert and physically dependent, present increased symptoms of depression, and require a longer length of stay.
The San Simeon team of medical professionals provides evaluation and treatment of speech and swallowing difficulties, problems with thinking and memory, and physical therapy to address the body’s ability to move and function while increasing muscle strength and mobility to prevent muscle contractures related to spasticity. We are proud to provide personalized occupational therapy and cognitive rehabilitation as part of treatment.
San Simeon’s program focuses on clinical management of the symptoms associated with MS including balance, bladder/bowel dysfunction, cognitive changes, fatigue, pain, heat sensitivity, respiratory muscle weakness, seizures, sensory disturbances, spasticity, speech impairment, dysphagia, tremors, vision deficits and weakness.
To ensure the rich quality of life they deserve, our dedicated social and recreational staff offer MS residents age-appropriate and meaningful recreational, social, vocational and leisure activities in and around our picturesque location along the shores of the Long Island Sound in Greenport.
