The LifeVest defibrillator is worn outside the body, as opposed to an implanted cardiovascular defibrillator in the chest. The device consistently monitors heart rate with sensing electronics to detect abnormal heart rhythms.

If a life-threatening rhythm is detected, the vest alerts the patient prior to delivering a treatment shock, allowing the patient to delay the shock. If the patient becomes unconscious, the device releases a gel over the therapy electrodes and delivers an electrical shock to restore normal rhythm.

The LifeVest wearable defibrillator is utilized for patients at risk of sudden cardiac arrest by providing protection during their changing conditions and while permanent sudden cardiac arrest has not been established. It is designed to be lightweight and easy to wear so the patient may engage in daily living activities all while providing peace of mind.

The two main components of the LifeVest are the garment and a monitor. The garment is worn under clothing and contains electrodes to monitor the patient’s electrocardiogram (ECG). The monitor is worn around the waist or from a shoulder strap.
