Part of the cutting-edge healthcare services at San Simeon by the Sound’s Greenport facility is a multi-disciplinary team that specializes in wound care. With countless years of combined expertise and diverse clinical knowledge, our staff is equipped to cover a wide range of modalities to improve wound healing and thus improving the patient’s quality of life and helping them return to doing what they love.

Wound specialists are health care professionals trained in the care and treatment of all types of wounds, both acute and chronic. Among the most commonly treated wounds are those sustained from an acute injury, surgical wounds, diabetic wounds and pressure sores.

Healthcare professionals are needed to help the estimated 5 million Americans who suffer from wounds that will not heal. Those suffering from these types of wounds experience a disruption to their everyday lives, and wound specialists can have a significant impact on their quality of life.

Wounds that the San Simeon by the Sound team treat may include:

  • Acute wounds from an emergency room
  • Post-operative wounds
  • Pressure wounds
  • Bed sores
  • Diabetic ulcers
  • Vascular ulcers
  • Radiation wounds

A patient with a wound that has not healed after one month of conventional therapy is often referred to a wound care specialist for further evaluation and treatment. The wound specialist may add new therapies such as a specialized treatment like the hyperbaric oxygen chamber to improve the healing process. Hyperbaric treatments provide 100% oxygen inside a pressurized chamber to aid healing.

The San Simeon by the Sound wound care team embraces their role in working with the patient’s family and recognizes their key role in educating all concerned parties through our program. By fostering a family-friendly educational environment, we believe that this gives patients the best chance to heal.

As wound specialists, we understand that each individual heals differently and improvements may not be immediately evident. Our philosophy is to demonstrate the patience and compassion patients need as they navigate the often long road to recovery.

At San Simeon, we strive to advance wound care management through an interdisciplinary approach including active participation of physicians and physician extenders. Our clinical wound care services, debridement, and prevention can all take place at the bedside. We also incorporate strategies to reduce the risk of staff injury while providing care to high-risk residents.
