San Simeon Hosts Nutrition Awareness Event

In recognition of National Nutrition Awareness Month, on March 21st San Simeon hosted an event in their lobby in conjunction with Suffolk County Community College to promote a healthier eating style.

Dietetic Intern Helps Residents & Staff Make Healthy Food Choices

Suffolk Community College student and dietetic intern, Olivia Fitzgerald put together a nutritional quiz for the staff and residents at San Simeon to enter their names into a raffle for a healthy salad bar prize. The event focused attention on the importance of making better food choices and developing sound eating habits. The goals of the event were to introduce individuals to healthy foods that they may have never tried before and for them to recognize the nutritional value the salad bar offers.

Over 50 people attended the event and enjoyed the various fruits and vegetables the salad bar had. One resident, Mary Tuthill (right), who worked as a nurse at San Simeon started the nutrition program in Greenport in the early 1970’s. The program provided hot healthy meals for local elderly people and delivered meals to the homes of those who were unable to get out. The 104-year-old resident was delighted to attend the event at San Simeon and see the continuance of the nutritional awareness program.
