October is National Physical Therapy Month

As many people already know, October is breast cancer awareness month. However, you may not know that October is also National Physical Therapy Month to help raise awareness of the benefits of physical therapy. The goal of National Physical Therapy Month is to acknowledge the importance of physical therapy in helping people find relief from pain and improve mobility.

National Physical Therapy Month dates back to 1981 when it was established by the American Physical Therapy Association to recognize the profession’s efforts to improve people’s functional ability and help them live a healthier life.

Movement and exercise are fundamental to living a healthy life, thus it’s important to have good posture and balance to prevent back, neck, and leg pain. National Physical Therapy Month is also a time to celebrate the wonderful work done by health professionals to help restore function and improve mobility in those suffering from pain and other chronic conditions. With many people becoming addicted to medications, such as opioids, physical therapy is a safer and effective alternative route to manage pain and help with chronic pain conditions.

Physical Therapy Promotes, Maintains & Restores

The role of a physical therapist in a skilled nursing facility is to reestablish physical function within the neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, integumentary, and cardiopulmonary systems. San Simeon by the Sound has a physical therapy program that will help people get back on their feet and recover from injury/manage their pain as quickly as possible.

Whether residents are suffering from mobility limitations, strength deficits, balance deficits, joint replacement, neuro-muscular diseases, cardiac conditions, stroke, fractures, post-surgical complications, or amputation, the physical therapists at San Simeon will come up with the right treatment plan to rehabilitate. Such exercises usually include stretching, strengthening exercises, core exercises, and walking all with the goal of improving strength, flexibility, mobility, and to increase independence.

Physical Therapy is a Skilled Healthcare Specialty

When someone is recovering from an injury or surgery or they are experiencing pain in their joints, the fear of limitations in mobility can be discouraging. That’s where the knowledgeable and professional physical therapists at San Simeon can help. They are very personable as they explain to residents what kind of exercise program will be used to help the person get back on their feet quickly and safely.

Before the exercise program is established, an evaluation is performed to put a plan of care in place. Physical therapy services vary from patient to patient as every person under San Simeon’s care has different requirements for therapy, thus individual rehabilitation is tailored for each patient to improve their endurance, mobility, balance, and strength.

Maintaining balance is extremely important for residents at San Simeon. Whether the person is having trouble standing, walking or getting from bed to wheelchair, our physical therapists will develop a treatment plan to improve upper and lower body strength to help regain independence. San Simeon also provides vestibular rehabilitation to improve balance and reduce dizziness. The balance training includes a gait pattern that maintains range of motion in the hips, knees, ankles, and spine as well as gives proper postural corrections. San Simeon also has Board Certified physiatrists to oversee rehabilitation regimes and individual progress.
