Signs Your Loved One Needs Nursing Home Care

The decision to put a loved one in a nursing home can be a tough one for a caregiver to make. When the time comes, one is often hit with feelings of guilt, anxiety, and grief. This happens even though the caregiver realizes the health and safety of a loved one is at stake. Here are some telltale signs it’s time to take action.

Falls and Injuries

If your senior parent has been falling and is hiding injuries, like bumps or bruises, they shouldn’t be left alone. Stairs, area rugs, and household clutter can be dangerous for a person with limited mobility.

Unused Medication

Forgetting or refusing to take medication is a big red flag that there’s a problem. Look for a growing pile of unopened medication. A trained professional can spot problems and quickly address them.

Personal Hygiene

If your loved one is having trouble bathing, dressing, cooking, or can’t keep up with housekeeping, a skilled nursing facility may be your best bet. Also, keep an eye on any weight loss or changes in eating habits.

Signs of Dementia

Signs of dementia include memory loss, anxiety, confusion, agitation, disorientation, or getting lost while driving. A person with dementia may also have difficulty finding words or forget to turn the stove off. An increased number of late-day phone calls to a caregiver is another sign of a growing problem.

Changes in Social Activity

It’s not a good sign if a person who has always been social suddenly withdraws from their usual activities. Senior care facilities often have many on-site group activities for their residents to enjoy. Participants don’t have to travel far to boost their social stimulation.
