What’s the Difference Between Long-Term Care and Short-Term Rehabilitation?

While the terms long term care and short-term rehabilitation may sound self-evident, it’s important to consider the difference. There are many factors to consider when seeking support and a potential living facility other than your own home when it has been determined that you need a level of care higher than what you yourself, or your family members can provide.

At San Simeon, our distinguished and award winning medical team will meet with you to determine the level of care and support that will work best for you. We carefully adhere to a patient-centered holistic approach to ensure that your stay with us, whether for the short or long term, is designed to ensure ultimate care and dignity.

Long Term Care

Sometimes families come to us when they are no longer able to provide care for a loved one, yet aren’t sure if the time has come to place that person in a long term care facility. Our skilled staff are experts at walking families through a detailed checklist that makes the decision process much easier and educates them on the benefits of having round the clock care provided. We explain the many medical care priorities that we adhere to as well as the fact that we consistently provide locally sourced meals, recreational activities and more.

San Simeon’s Long-Term Care services include, but are not limited to:

  • Nutritional Planning
  • Diabetes Management
  • Pain Management
  • Hemodialysis
  • Cancer Care
  • Ostomy Care

Short Term Post-Acute Rehabilitation

This type of care is considered to be a short term solution. Our number one goal centers around providing medical services that get our guests back on their feet and back into their community as quickly as possible. Our short-term rehabilitation program provides services for those seeking cardiac recovery as a result of a heart attack or stroke, and those recovering from surgery who need specialized care that can’t easily be provided at home.

Our physical, occupational and speech therapy services are provided seven days a week in our state-of-the-art rehabilitation department through a partnership with Preferred Therapy Solutions, a leading national provider of rehabilitative services.

No matter which program fits your needs, at San Simeon, a Long Island/Suffolk County nursing home, we are fully committed to our residents and their family members. We work hard to create a community that is clean, loving and nurturing so that each person feels like they belong and are part of a larger family.
