San Simeon’s Physical Therapy Program Gets People Back on Their Feet

In order to get patients back on their feet and home quicker, San Simeon by the Sound has the capability of providing physical, occupational and speech therapies for as long as the patient’s physician recommends it. We provide therapy services up to seven times per week and address a wide variety of mobility limitations, such as strength deficits, balance deficits, deficits in gait and gait patterns that directly impact a person’s activity level and participation in their activities of daily living. Our advanced therapeutic modalities address a wide range of orthopedic, neurological and other conditions, including joint replacement, neuro-muscular diseases, cardiac conditions, stroke, fractures, post-surgical complications, diabetes complications, amputation.

Physical Therapy is More Than “Exercise,” But a Skilled Healthcare Specialty

Sometimes, the hardest part of recovery is just getting moving again. The fear of pain and limitations in mobility can be discouraging. However, the right treatment plan can get a person back on their feet quickly and safely. When a patient comes to San Simeon for rehabilitation, our physical therapists are eager to help improve mobility and increase independence. Physical therapy exercises usually include stretching, core exercises and walking, all with the goal of improving flexibility and strength.

The role of a physical therapist in a skilled nursing facility is to promote, maintain and restore physical function within the neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, integumentary, and the cardiopulmonary systems. When a patient comes to San Simeon, an evaluation is performed, and a plan of care is established to improve their endurance, mobility, balance, and strength. Physical therapy services vary from patient to patient, and so our physical therapists work to prepare patients for discharge, and to ensure they are able to continue progress once they return home. We understand that every person under our care has different requirements for therapy, so the individual rehabilitation is tailored for each patient.

Whether recovering from surgery or joint replacement, together you and your therapist will develop a plan of care so you can get back to the things you really want to be doing. We have Board Certified physiatrists to oversee rehabilitation regimes and individual patient progress.

Physical therapy balance and strength training

Balance Training

San Simeon also provides vestibular rehabilitation, which is an exercise-based program to improve balance and reduce dizziness-related problems. Statistics show the elderly represents more than one-third of all hospital injury admissions, and more than 80 percent of these injuries are caused by accidental falls. Our balance training includes a gait pattern which maintains range of motion in the hips, knees, ankles and spine. Balance and strength training exercises, postural corrections, weight shifting exercises and proper instruction can help normalize the gait pattern.

Whether it is trouble getting from bed to wheelchair or rising from the living room lounge chair, your physical therapist will develop a treatment plan to improve upper and lower body strength to help regain independence.

Put your trust in San Simeon by the Sound by regaining your strength one step at a time.
